Supported by the NSW Government through Create NSW, Sydney Wind Symphony (Music Director – Mark Brown) is proud to present Curtain Up, as part of its ongoing commitment to showcasing Australian soloists and wind ensemble music in Australia in addition to working collaboratively with other Australian musical colleagues.

We are pleased to announce that the concert program will be performed in both Sydney and Bowral in collaboration with the Southern Highlands Concert Band (Music Director – Julian Paviour) on Saturday, 24 November and Sunday, 25 November respectively.

In this concert, Sydney Wind Symphony is thrilled to be working with the highly talented, rising trumpet star, Jenna Smith. 2018 is Jenna’s second year as a Trumpet Fellow in the Sydney Symphony Orchestra (SSO) Fellowship Program. She has performed with the Sydney and Tasmanian Symphony Orchestras and the SSO Sinfonia. In 2016, she was a member of the Australian World Orchestra’s Academy Program and toured to Singapore. She has participated in Australian Youth Orchestra (AYO) programs since 2012 and performed as the AYO Principal Trumpet in 2017.

The concert program will feature as a tribute to Bernstein’s 100th anniversary the lively Overture to Candide, the cornerstone wind band music of Gustav Holst, the colourful and energetic Arutiunian Trumpet Concerto, performed by soloist – Jenna Smith, Zodiac Dances by Philip Sparke, music from Cinderella by Patrick Doyle and more.

Arutiunian’s Trumpet Concerto has become a favourite in the trumpet repertoire due to its unique folkinfluence, lyrical cantabile sections and virtuosic passages. The piece was written for Armenian
trumpeter Zolak Vartisarian, who died in military action before Arutiunian had finished the piece. It was instead premiered by soviet trumpet great Timofei Dokschitzer.
