Wet Weather Activities
There’s nothing better than curling up with a book and a hot beverage on a rainy day. If you’re on holidays in the Shire though you may think your plans to learn to surf, or go hiking in the national park are ruined… fear not!
There are so many places to visit in rainy weather, you can think of this as an opportunity to see the sights you would have otherwise missed.

Stay undercover
First stop is a visit to Hazelhurst art gallery, this cultural haven showcases some of the best Australian and International artists. So far in 2012 they have showcased work from Sydney based artist Peter Sharp, Ingeborg Tyssen and Sue Ford two major figures in Australian photographic history. They’ve also exhibited the work of pool artists Sean Izzard, Simon Harsent, Danny Eastwood, Christopher Ireland and Ingvar Kenne.
After a stroll around the gallery why not settle in at the Gallery Café,overlooking Hazelhurst's parkland gardens.
Keep your feet dry
The obvious rainy day activity is shopping and there are plenty of great stores and shopping centres around the Shire, you're guaranteed to be kept busy for at least a day. For a complete guide to shopping in the Shire click here. Westfield Miranda is the largest shopping centre with a huge range of fashion, sports, homewares and department stores, as well as cinemas, food courts and much more. Cronulla mall is also a good option, most of the mall is undercover, however it is outside so remember to wear closed in shoes.
You can still laugh in the rain
Why not catch a comedy, or the latest blockbuster complete with popcorn and choc tops! There are two cinema complexes in the Shire. One is located in Cronulla Mall next to McDonalds, the other is in Westfield Miranda. For something a bit more competitive why not ‘Knock em Down’ at AMF Ten pin bowling at Southgate Shopping Centre.
A Hot Mocha, skinny cap, or Macchiato?
Another favourite pastime for locals when the weather is dreary is to head to a café, take a blanket, order something hot and settle in. Cronulla and Gymea have plenty of cute little cafes to choose from, the Teahouse at Camellia Gardens is also undercover and provides a tranquil setting regardless of the weather.
Audley Weir café is one of the most picturesque places to sit for a couple of hours with a coffee, but if you’re travelling by car just check that the Weir hasn’t flooded and the bridge is open.
Perfect time for pampering
The rain is almost like a sign that you should slow down, relax, put your plans on hold and visit a spa! A mani-pedi, hot stone massage, or rejuvenating facial will leave you glowing and feeling better than ever. For a guide to the beauty therapists available in Cronulla click here.
Real book reading weather
Snuggle up with a paperback from the enchanting Berkelouw bookstore in Cronulla mall, once you’ve journeyed through the rows of inviting books take a peek at their range of homemade cards and unique gifts.
Further down Cronulla mall is the Best Little Bookshop in Town a quaint bookshop selling a great range of second hand books as well as new releases.
There are also a number of local libraries in the area as well if you’d prefer to borrow rather than buy.
And at night?
Most of the bars, clubs and pubs are indoors so the rain shouldn’t affect your night time activities. For a guide to nightlife in Cronulla click here, there's also Gymea Hotel and the Vinyl Room in Gymea.
